The Megger Definition came from the company originally known as “AVO”. It was around the time they developed the insulation testers that have become so popular today.
This company eventually changed its name to “Megger Group Limited” in 2002 due to the popularity of their original product. This tool generates a high voltage so it can test the resistance of insulation. The insulation resistance tester will then give the electrician a value of the item being tested. Today’s insulation resistance tester (or “Megger” as they are commonly called) will usually have a ohm meter function and will be used often as a multimeter. The instrument can be traced back to the late 1800’s but was finally trademarked under the name “Megger” on May 25th 1903. A modern version of Megger insulation resistance tester called “model MJ15” can generate up to five kilovolts. It’s a simple tool and provides an accurate reading.
